Years later, I began my journey into entrepreneurship, starting with installing bushfire protection systems. The testing ground? My parents' backyard. It was intense, labor-intensive work, but it set the foundation for what would become a vital service.

During this period, I learned the hard way that specifications like pump capacity often don’t hold up in practice. Despite claims that a Honda Davey GX200 6.5hp twin impeller pump could handle only 15-18 sprinklers, I managed to optimize it to efficiently run 42. Pushing it to 45, however, resulted in inefficiency, a critical discovery that shaped our designs.

Through relentless experimentation, I developed six effective designs, which are now the backbone of our installations. Our reputation grew, and it was clear we were filling a critical gap in bushfire protection, a sentiment echoed by our relieved customers. Initially operating as Waterflow Plumbing, we soon rebranded to Sydney Bushfire Sprinklers to reflect our specialised service.

Recognising the need for strategic guidance, I convened a group of advisors, including the captain of my fire brigade, a district manager with 75 years of firefighting experience, a retired CFO, and my mentor—a legend in every sense. With a business consultant to steer our discussions, the consensus was clear: focus on installing bushfire sprinkler systems.

Thus, we expanded, continually enhancing our systems to be more efficient and accessible to various budgets. Now, with over 30 years as a firefighter in the RFS and a thriving business, I find profound satisfaction in providing a service that protects communities.

P.S. Being a deputy captain and riding the fire truck still thrills me. There’s no replacing the rush of being on the front lines, making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
